Swiss Civil Code (SCC)

Introduction ZGB

The Swiss Civil Code (ZGB) is the most important code in Swiss private law. It regulates legal relations between private individuals and includes, among other things, provisions on personal law, family law, inheritance law, property law and the Law of Obligations. The Civil Code was adopted in 1907 and has been revised several times since then. It is divided into five books, each of which covers different areas of law. Among other things, the Civil Code defines the rights and obligations that persons have in various life situations, such as marriage, divorce, inheritance or conclusion of a contract. It forms the basis for everyday life and business in Switzerland and is of great importance for lawyers, judges and citizens.
